Job hunt, salaries, & ghosting
This edition contains my response to a LinkedIn post question in a career development group last week. What to do when you don’t get any response from recruiters (he was ghosted) after sending them requested salary information?
Hope it’s helpful if you or someone you know is in the job market.
It's hard to know exactly what is going on with what you've shared. Here are my two cents, name redacted.
First - This is a function of leverage in the labor market swinging back to the employer. When the market favors candidates, you typically don't see this as much. Unless someone wants to make a quick hire and take you off the table.
Another observation - certain states are requiring (or in the process of) salaries to be disclosed in position postings. I think these include CO, NY, CA, and IL? There may be criteria/exceptions for this like business size, etc.
Salary (for a good opportunity) is typically discussed towards the end of a negotiation, when the parties have an interest in each other. If the hiring party is pushing for this early in the process, it may indicate salary is a bigger factor than getting the best/right person. Or the recruiter may be lazy. Could be both.
If you're not ready to answer, deflect the question. Say you need to learn more about the opportunity or company. You need more information. Remember, you are interviewing them as well.
They might ghost you anyway, but there's nothing you can do about that. An organization that practices ghosting lacks a certain... say we say professionalism?
